Preschool is an important benchmark in a kid’s life. Not only do preschoolers learn their letters, numbers, and how to write their names, but they also get the opportunity to interact socially with their peers. The combination of educational and social growth that happens in preschool makes it a positive growth experience for many kids. But how do you know if your child is ready for this step? Here are 5 developmental signs that will help you decide if your child is ready for preschool.

The developmental signals that indicate when a child is ready to begin preschool are listed below. They are not all required, but if your child possesses these skills, they will find the transition to be much easier.

1. Communication

One development sign to look for is your child’s ability to communicate. As a parent, you know your child’s needs, oftentimes without needing your child to tell you. At preschool, however, your child will be interacting with adults who don’t know them that well. It’s important that your child be able to communicate to the teachers and kids. There are things that you can do at home in order to encourage your children to speak more, such as teach them songs that they can sing in a group. A good way to learn new songs is by visiting the KLS youtube channel here. They create childrens songs to help them to learn how to do everyday roles, such as tidying up after themselves. A useful skill for pre school!

2. Independent

You will also want your child to be independent. Independence is seen in a variety of ways. Does your child attempt to dress himself? Does he like to do things for himself? Can he be away from you without having a meltdown? If so, then this is a sign that your child might be ready for preschool.

3. Naptime

If you’re planning to send your child to a morning preschool, chances are they won’t have naptime. Can your child get through the morning without crashing? If a morning nap is still necessary in your child’s routine, it might be too soon to send them to preschool. On the other hand, if your child can go all day (or most of the day) without a nap and can just sleep happily on their twin mattress at night, they could be ready to attend preschool.

4. Potty Trained

A major developmental sign for preschool readiness is potty training. Is your child potty trained? Although accidents can still happen, your child should be able to go through the day without the use of a pull-up or diaper. Your child should be able to consistently use the bathroom independently. In addition to the other developmental signs, your child being potty trained is a sure sign that they are ready for preschool.

5. Social Growth

Your child’s social development should also be taken into consideration for preschool readiness. Once your child is in preschool, they will grow and mature socially, but it’s important to have the foundation necessary for success. Can your child get along with groups? Can he work alongside other kids without any issues? If your child is comfortable in larger groups, then preschool could be right around the corner!

Knowing when your child is ready for preschool is nerve-wracking for parents. If your child meets most or all of these 5 developmental signs, then it’s very likely that he is ready for preschool.
