Gingerbread Playdough Recipe

Gingerbread Playdough Sensory Activities

One of my favorite holiday scents is that of fresh gingerbread baking in the oven and luckily there is more than one way to enjoy it! Whipping up a batch of Gingerbread Playdough makes the whole house smell great and gives the kids hours of fun and holiday play. Far easier than baking homemade cookies, it takes only about 15 minutes and itā€™s ready to be kneaded, rolled, and shaped into darling little gingerbread men or any shape your child wants to create. You will definitely want to get in on the fun too, as sensory scented playdough is a great stress relief around the holidays!

Gingerbread PlayDough Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 Ā¼ cup water
  • ā…“ cup of salt
  • 1 Tablespoon Cream of Tartar
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 Tablespoon cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground cloves
  • 2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Gingerbread Play Dough Directions:

Whisk all the dry ingredients together in a large saucepan.

When dry ingredients are well-combined stir in water and oil, mixing constantly over medium-high heat.

When mixture begins to separate from the sides of the pan and most of the stickiness has disappeared its ready to remove from heat.

Place on flour lined surface and once cooled enough to touch knead the dough for about 2 minutes.

Store in an airtight container, we have had batches that lasted for weeks when well stored! If it becomes a little dry just knead in a bit of oil to soften it.

Provide your little ā€œbakerā€ with rolling pins, gingerbread cookie cutters, buttons, beads, and other small items to make their gingerbread come to life! If you like to keep it natural and organic you can use coffee beans, whole cloves, and cinnamon sticks for decorations.

We also had this really fun mini gingerbread house cookie cutter to make 3-D shapes with, while I couldnā€™t find the exact one I have this one would work great too if you want to add it to your gingerbread collection!
