Hands-On learning key math and reading skills with LEGO™ or Strictly Briks™ Building blocks.
Hard: Students complete the reading and math activities as they build the pictures. Each picture has a different skill for students to showcase. Graphing, Tally Marks, Inequlities, Planning, Roll & Build, Spin & Read Sight Words, Addition, Subtraction, Spin & Build, Sight Word Writing.
Medium: Students follow the steps to plan then recreate the picture without a colorful template. Students must look at the smaller colored grid for reference as they recreate the build on their mat.
Easy: Students build the picture then practice finding their word in the sentences below. Encourage young students to say the word as they touch it with their finger. Older students can read the sight word sentences for reading practice, or write them on their own notebook paper.
Required Materials: Students will need bricks such as LEGO™ or Strictly Briks™ in a variety of colors. Brick sizes will be 2×2, 2×3, or 2×4. No other sizes are needed for this pack. I personally picked up this pack and this pack. Optional: It is recommended that students have a base mat 6.25 x 6.25” or larger to build their pictures. Younger students might benefit from a transparent 6.25” square base they can place exactly over the building mats to see where to place their bricks (see the medium level above).
Free Brick Building Mats:
If you’d like to try these building mats out with your own kiddos, we’ve put together a small sample of activities below:
Outer Space Brick Building Mat
This is a free brick building mat for students working on inequalities and comparisons.
Snowman Roll & Build Activity
This is a fun activity for younger students working on counting.
Butterfly Build and Read Sight Words
This is a free printable building brick mat for students to make a butterfly, then read the sight word sentences.
Step-by-Step Umbrella Grid
For an added challenge, this free printable template requires students to build the picture by looking at the colored reference.
Where do we get a transparent mat?
Hello! I purchased a set of different colored mats and transparent was one of the options. There were also some different colored transparent mats included as well. I’ve linked up all my fine motor product purchases here: https://www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-06ce3c25?listId=W649ATDB9ZY9 I hope that helps! 🙂 Valerie
